De ‘Babel fish’ is bekend uit ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’: “It is a universal translator that neatly crosses the language divide between any species.” Met de aankondiging van oortjes Google Pixel Buds komt de in de jaren zeventig beschreven situatie verdomd dicht bij: “The earbuds connect wirelessly with Google’s latest smartphones, but more importantly, they’re able to access Google Assistant, the company’s virtual personal concierge, which launched exactly a year ago. Through this software, Google claims the earbuds can translate 40 spoken languages nearly in real time—or at least, fast enough to hold a conversation.”
OK, ongetwijfeld zal dat allemaal nog niet perfect gaan, want dat weten we van de teksten die we in Google Translate stoppen. Maar tegelijk gaan de ontwikkelingen op dit moment op vele vlakken heel hard. Dus de tijd dat we gewoon een gesprek kunnen voeren met iemand wiens taal we niet machtig zijn, die komt heel dichtbij.
